Signs You Child May Have an Undiagnosed Allergy

Does your child frequently experience nasal congestion, itchy eyes or a sore throat? Allergies may be to blame. The pediatricians at allergiesMundelein Pediatrics in Grayslake, IL, share a few signs and symptoms you may notice if your child has allergies.

Allergy signs

If your child has allergies, he or she may display one or more of these signs and symptoms:

  • Coughing, Sneezing, Congestion, Runny Nose: These classic cold signs can also occur if your child has allergies. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to tell if your child's symptoms are caused by a virus or allergies. When symptoms last two weeks or more and never seem to improve, schedule an appointment at our Grayslake office.
  • Watery, Itchy, Red Eyes: Does your child frequently complain that his or her eyes itch or burn? Have you noticed that your son or daughter's eyes look a little red and swollen? Allergy symptoms are often very noticeable in and around the eyes.
  • Dark Circles Under the Eyes: Dark circles aren't just a sign of lack of sleep, but can accompany nasal congestion. The skin under the eyes appears darker when blood vessels under the eyes become swollen.
  • Virus Symptoms Without a Fever: A low-grade fever often occurs if your child has a cold or another viral infection. When cold-like symptoms occur without a fever, allergies may actually be the cause.
  • Lethargy: When you don't feel well, it's hard to muster the energy to play or do your homework. Lack of sleep due to nasal congestion can make fatigue even worse.
  • Ear Infections: Allergies may trigger inflammation in your child's ears. If fluid builds up as a result, your son or daughter may be more likely to develop an ear infection.
  • No Interest in Breakfast: Does your once-ravenous child barely touch breakfast? Post-nasal drip, a common allergy symptom, can make your son or daughter feel nauseated in the morning and uninterested in eating.

Allergies can occur year-round and may develop very suddenly. If your child has any of these symptoms, we can recommend treatment options that will improve your son or daughter's comfort. Call the pediatricians at Mundelein Pediatrics in Grayslake, IL, at (847) 548-7337 to schedule an appointment.
